Accessibility Adoption Plan in an Agile Environment

In many companies, accessibility adoption is approached reactively. In some of them, luckily there is an internal accessibility specialist team which manages auditing and control functions. In contrast, software development often follows an agile process. Although there are proposals for integrating accessibility into agile processes, there is still significant progress to be made.

This paper introduces an intervention proposal to establish a robust foundation for the sustainable and integrated adoption of accessibility in agile environments, focusing on a case study of a Learning Management System (LMS), developed by a leading education technology company. This approach examines the current state of the accessibility within the product, followed by an in-depth analysis of team structures and processes in alignment with the World Wide Web Accessibility Maturity Model. Furthermore, it proposes a short-term plan that defines goals, responsibilities, roles, activities, indicators and deliverables to facilitate meaningful accessibility adoption within the development lifecycle.

The case study offers a tangible example that can inspire other companies to manage the agile accessibility transformation successfully.
